Welcome to Junior Chemistry

Course Description
This is probably your first general chemistry course; Welcome. Throughout this school year you will be learning about chemistry and how it can be applied in the world around us. Chemistry is everywhere and you probably don't even realize how much chemistry takes place right in front of your face everyday. We will discuss basic chemical principles, nomenclature, and a little bit of the history behind the science; how chemistry came to be what it is today. We will also get hands on practice through several lab experiments, some of which can be performed at home. Once this class is completed you will be able to explain simple ideas like why water gains volume when it freezes and why there is a hole in the ozone layer.

Grading Policy
There will be four exams throughout the year, one at the end of each of the four units. These exams will make up 60% of your final grade. There will be ten lab write-ups which will count for 20% of your final grade. Homework will be worth 10% of the final grade. Pop quizzes may be distributed throughout the year with little to no advanced warning. These will account for 5% of your grade as will participation. The final breakdown looks like this:

4 Exams 60%
10 Labs 20%
Homework 10%
Pop Q's 5%
Participation 5%

There will also be a weekly quiz, this quiz is for extra credit. The weekly quiz can vary in difficulty from easy to very hard. This is a golden opportunity which, if you keep up with your studying, can add a total of up to 10 points to your final grade. it would be the difference between a B and an A or an F and a D.

Behavior Guidelines
I expect this classroom to be a very respectful one. We are all young adults in the room and I hope that we can all act like one. All standard school guidelines apply in addition to the consequences I have laid out. I am generous and I like working with people to solve a possible dilemma.

1st time = Warning
2nd time = Detention
3rd time = In School Suspension

Lab Safety
Please refer to the attached lab safety guidelines:

I promise that all in this room can and will pass this class under the condition that you put forth effort. Chemistry is not as bad as you all may have heard and you will pass as long as you follow the recommended study time. I look forward to a fun and exciting year!
